What is psychotherapy/counseling? Who are psychotherapists? What happens in psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy, also called the “talking cure”, involves a professional relationship between a trained psychotherapist and a person who seeks help because they are troubled by something in themselves and/or their lives. The process, which involves mutual respect, safety and confidentiality, allows a person to move beyond obstacles and unhappiness into more creative, adaptive, healthy and energetic pursuits.
It is common for people to have only a vague notion of what’s wrong in their lives; some people just feel stuck and can’t
figure out why. They may notice that they seem to get caught up in the same old patterns time and again despite their best efforts to do something different, to find someone different.
An effective psychotherapist is trained to listen, understand and then work to help their clients (patients) move forward
towards their goals. And while therapists operate with a theoretical understanding of human motivation and behavior in mind, people aren’t interchangeable; good treatment must be tailored to the individual and is based on that person’s own story. Two people may be depressed and have similar symptoms (e.g. insomnia, sadness, irritability, etc.), but they have very different histories and reasons for their depression.
Your first steps. I recommend we meet for one to three sessions to determine whether my style is a good match for you.
