Snap a rubber band to get rid of bad thoughts If a panic attack gets too bad you can pass out or lose control Medication is the best treatment for anxiety disorders If you suffer from anxiety, it's best to avoid stressful situations Talking with friends & family & getting their support in helping me avoid being anxious is most helpful. |
Realities:
Studies show suppressing your thoughts makes them stronger & more resistant to change It’s unlikely you’ll faint because fainting is caused by lowering blood pressure; during panic attacks blood pressure actually rises slightly Research shows psychotherapy is most helpful in the long run, with medication useful as a supplement, especially in the beginning. Stress is a normal part of life; it’s impossible to avoid. And avoiding stress doesn’t cure the anxiety. What is curative is learning to face your fears, and having a different relationship with yourself, other people and your anxiety. This is how therapy can help Support from friends & family is important, but is useful only if it helps you move to a different place with your anxiety. If and when it allows you to maintain your fears, it is counterproductive. |
